Heart disease has been the number one killer in America for over a century. Every 33 seconds, someone in this country suffers a heart attack, resulting in over 700,000 deaths every year.
Yet, for the past 70 years, mainstream medicine has prescribed the exact same formula: lower your cholesterol, avoid fat, and take statins.
If that approach worked, heart disease statistics would be dropping. Instead, the numbers continue to climb.
I recently sat down with Dr. Chris Mley on the Ancient Health Podcast to discuss why conventional cardiac care is missing the mark—and what you can actually do to keep yourself off my operating table.
The Cholesterol Distraction
For decades, we’ve been told that LDL cholesterol is the ultimate villain. But when you examine patients hospitalized for heart disease, only about 50% have elevated cholesterol. It’s essentially a coin flip.
Cholesterol isn’t in your body to cause damage; it is vital for life. It acts as the precursor to essential hormones like testosterone, estrogen, and progesterone, as well as vitamin D, and plays a key role in your immune system.
When we look at the root cause of heart disease, cholesterol is merely a downstream participant. The true culprit? Insulin resistance.
When researcher Dr. Joseph Craft tested heart disease patients using proper insulin protocols (the Craft test), he discovered that 95% of them were insulin resistant.
If you want to prevent arterial damage, hyper-fixating on LDL won’t save you. You must address your metabolic health.
The Ask: One Question for Your Doctor
Next time your physician looks at your lab results and tells you your cholesterol is high, ask them one simple four-word question:
“Am I insulin resistant?”
Asking this does two things:
- It shifts the focus to the actual root cause of metabolic and cardiovascular disease.
- It tests whether your doctor knows how to screen for it.
Most standard blood panels don’t check for insulin resistance. However, a simple fasting insulin test—which can often be ordered out-of-pocket for around $10 to $12—provides clarity. If your fasting insulin is in the double digits (10 µIU/mL or higher), your body is showing early warning signs of metabolic dysfunction years before physical symptoms occur.
Simple Frameworks for Heart and Metabolic Health
Reversing insulin resistance and protecting your heart doesn’t require complex interventions or pharmaceuticals. It comes down to basic daily habits:
- Eat Real Food: Focus on nutrient-dense, bioavailable whole foods—specifically meat and animals raised on what grows from the ground. Cut out ultra-processed foods, refined carbohydrates, and added sugars that drive systemic inflammation.
- Meat is Medicine: Red meat provides critical, highly bioavailable nutrients for heart function—such as CoQ10 and Vitamin K2—without harming your cardiovascular health.
- Prioritize Muscle: Focus on resistance training to build and maintain lean muscle mass. Muscle is metabolically active and acts as a reservoir to store excess glucose.
- Eliminate Daily Friction: You don’t need grueling daily gym sessions to stay fit. Take the stairs, park further away, use a standing desk, and move for five minutes every hour.

We also covered:
- The truth about statin risk metrics (Absolute Risk vs. Relative Risk).
- Early physical warning signs of insulin resistance (skin tags, visceral belly fat, and fatigue).
- How stress and your autonomic nervous system impact cardiac function.
- Using an elimination diet to reset your metabolic health.
